Trent University Invites Durham Community to an “Evening with the Experts”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Free November 21 Event Will Feature Talks on Climate Change

Wednesday, November 14, 2007, Peterborough

All members of the Oshawa, Whitby and Durham communities are invited to attend Inside Trent: An Evening with the Experts, an event scheduled for Thursday, November 21 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Oshawa Golf & Curling Club (160 Alexandra Street).

At the event, three experts from Trent University, two professors and one undergraduate student, will discuss the topic of “Climate Change: A New Reality”. The experts are: Dr. Chris Furgal, a professor of the Indigenous Studies Department and Environmental and Resource Studies program at Trent and the co-lead author of the Nobel Prize-winning International Arctic Science Committee-directed “Arctic Climate Impact Assessment”; Dr. Christine Freeman-Roth, a philosophy professor who is well-versed on the environmental ethics of climate change; and Robert Aingiliiq Tookoome, an Inuit student who has seen first-hand the alarming consequences of climate change in Canada’s north.

“Climate change is now considered the biggest environmental crisis of our time. Its effects are no longer simply projected for the future, but rather they are being documented by scientists and communities today,” says Dr. Furgal, who will be presenting his research on climate change and the human impacts in the arctic. “It is becoming an increasingly important social responsibility for us as citizens to learn what we can do to minimize our contribution to the problem.”

All members of the community are welcome at this free event, which sponsored by the Trent University Legacy Society. Limited seating is available. To reserve a seat, contact Alumni House at Trent University at 1-800-267-5774 or register on-line at www.trentu.ca/insidetrentu/oshawa.php by Monday, November 19, 2007.

The new Inside Trent: An Evening with the Experts series launched in Peterborough in May 2007 as a community outreach event, designed to bring Trent’s experts to the community to facilitate a sharing of knowledge on topical subjects. This event will be held on an annual basis.
