Varsity Women’s Rugby Coach and Five Players Honoured by Ontario University Athletics (OUA)
Nancy Marcotte Named Coach of the Year; Krissy Boyles wins Most Valuable Player; Lori McAvoy, Ali Harvey, Julie Brown, and Ashley Burton Named OUA All-Stars
Wednesday, October 24, 2007, Peterborough
Trent University’s varsity women’s rugby coach, Nancy Marcotte, and player Krissy Boyles have recently been honoured by Ontario University Athletics (OUA) as the Russell Division Coach of the Year and Most Valuable Player respectively; four other players, Lori McAvoy, Ali Harvey, Julie Brown, and Ashley Burton, were named OUA All-Stars as the Excalibur near the close of an historic winning season.
Nancy Marcotte is described as a pioneer of women’s rugby in Ontario. Prior to coming to Trent University in 2002, Ms. Marcotte was a founding member and coach of the Peterborough Pagan’s women’s rugby team, and coach of the Crestwood Secondary School’s team. She was also assistant coach of the 2006 national champions Ontario senior women’s rugby team.
Krissy Boyles led Trent in season scoring. With 27 points, Ms. Boyles alone accounted for 30 per cent of the team’s scoring – a number unheard of in OUA women’s rugby. Described as a brilliant tactical kicker and ball-handler, Ms. Boyles’ creativity sparked Trent’s emergence as a competitive team this season.
Ms. Boyles shares the spotlight with fellow team members and OUA All-Stars Lori McAvoy, Ali Harvey, Julie Brown, and Ashley Burton.
As a team, the Trent Excalibur has enjoyed their best season in team history, winning the Russell Division championship for the first time in the University's history, with a winning record of 4-1. After a tough loss in the OUA semi-final game against the University of Waterloo last week, the Excalibur are set to challenge the Guelph Gryphons for the OUA bronze medal at the Trent University stadium on Friday, October 26 at 7 p.m.
