Trent International Program (TIP) Welcomes New Students to Annual TIP Camp

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Orientation Weekend at Camp Kawartha Begins Today

Friday, August 31, 2007, Peterborough

The Trent International Program (TIP) will welcome over 120 new students from around the world to Trent at the annual TIP Camp, held at Camp Kawartha on Friday, August 31 through to Monday, September 3.

TIP campers this year include outstanding students from Lithuania, Albania, St. Maarten, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, China, Japan and more than 40 other countries. Sixty campers will be coming to Trent to pursue a four year honours degree, while 30 students will attend Trent ESL to improve their English skills before entering a University degree program, and two dozen campers will be exchange students who have switched places with a Canadian counterpart for the year. Over the course of the weekend, upper-year camp assistants from Canada and abroad will share their experiences of life in Peterborough, introducing the new students to the supportive environment that makes students from around the world feel at home at Trent.

“The purpose of TIP camp is to provide a warm Canadian welcome to new international students,” said TIP Director Mike Allcott. “After many months of communicating with us on-line and via telephone, this is their opportunity to fully experience being a part of the Trent International Program – where the world learns together.”

TIP campers will be picked up at the Toronto airport and escorted directly to Camp Kawartha where they will spend four days gathering information about university success and life in Canada. Over the course of the holiday weekend, the new international students will experience the natural setting of woods and lake. TIP Camp will give many of the students a deeper understanding of the value Canadians place on the environment. They may also have their first Canadian experience of canoeing or swimming in a natural lake.

On Saturday, September 1 at 12 noon, TIP campers will be greeted by Trent University President Bonnie Patterson. On Sunday, September 2 at 1:00 p.m. Peterborough Mayor Paul Ayotte will be on hand to officially welcome the students to the Peterborough community.

“By truly valuing the knowledge and perspective each international student brings to the Trent community, we give them a sense of what it feels like to be at home in the Canadian mosaic,” said Dr. Allcott.
