University from Friday, August 17 to Sunday, August 19 to take part in the new “Bring it On!” program to prepare them for their first time living away from home to attend university.

Through a wide variety of interactive and fun activities across Symons campus in Peterborough, this new orientation program provides students with a chance to build strategies for success academically, socially, and on a personal level for their years ahead at Trent University.

“Bring it On!” introduces first-year students to campus life while leading them through interactive workshops on issues such as goal setting, problem solving, and survival during the challenging times to come. Students will also have a chance to take part in a variety of pursuits, such as canoe games on the Otonabee river, a fencing demonstration, a tour through the new DNA building, and a talking circle in the First Peoples House of Learning. This year marks the inaugural launch of the “Bring it On!” program at Trent University.

“Students are often eager, and a bit anxious, to learn about their next big adventure,” said Jeff Cadence, campus programs voordinator who led the development of “Bring it On!” “This weekend will give them a bit of a grounding and familiarity with the campus as well as a chance to make social connections before the excitement of Introductory Seminar Week in September. It will also help them start off with a positive attitude and a realistic sense of the challenges and rewards they can look forward to.”

Mr. Cadence went on to explain that this type of head-start program is very popular in colleges and universities in the U.S. Normally, they are offered in one of two formats, as either academic and instructional, or as an opportunity to have some fun and adventures. “’Bring it On!’ blends the two by making the days a good mix of interactive, fun programming with opportunities for reflection on what their Trent experience is going to mean to them,” he noted.

A total of 18 students have signed up from communities across the province, including North Bay, Whitby, Port Carling, Almonte, Oakville, Cumberland, Brantford, Innisfil, Scarborough, Hamilton and Toronto. Mr. Cadence is very pleased with the level of interest shown in the initial program, and hopes to see more Trent students from other parts of the country take part next year.

“Bring it On!” begins on Friday, August 17 from 5:00 to 8:00pm with registration in Otonabee College ‘F’ House and wraps up Sunday, August 19 at 3:00pm.
