Graduate Research at Trent University Gets a Significant Boost

Graduate Students Awarded $556,500 from the
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

Twelve graduate students from Trent University learned recently that they will receive a total of $556,500 from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Awarded by SSHRC’s Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program and the Doctoral and PostCanadian Graduate Doctoral Scholarships programs, this funding will support innovative graduate research at Trent across many disciplines, including psychology, Indigenous studies, English literature, and public policy studies.

“It’s terrific to see this level of support for the excellent research conducted by our graduate students,” said Dr. Susan Clark, vice president (academic) at Trent University. “Trent offers one of the finest university research environments in the world, so with this funding graduate students can develop their talents here while advancing important areas of knowledge in the humanities and social sciences.”

2007 SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship competition winners:

• Brad Kent, English Literature, $81,000
• Martin Tremblay, Indigenous studies, $38,000

2007 Canada Graduate Scholarships, Doctoral competition winners:

• Marc Blainey, Archaeology, $105,000
• Jo Anne Colson, Canadian social policy studies, $105,000
• Jennifer Eastabrook, Psychology, $105,000

2007 Canada Graduate Scholarships, Master’s competition winners:

• Jessica Dunkin, History, $17,500
• Sarah Hamilton, Theory, Culture & Politics $17,500
• Joel Irwin, English Literature and medieval studies, $17,500
• Patricia Life, English Literature, Canadian studies and Indigenous studies $17,500
• Christopher Little, Anthropology, $17,500
• Susan Reynolds, Psychology, Canadian studies and Indigenous studies $17,500
• Robin Webster, global studies, $17,500

This funding was part of SSHRC’s $105 million investment announced last Friday to support graduate research and training. SSHRC funding offers graduate students the opportunity to attend leading institutions in other parts of the country or abroad, and to study with the best researchers in their fields. Trent is renowned for its research excellence, and is noted as being one of Canada's most research intensive universities.
