 Trent Cultural Studies Student Selected as One of Four Peter Gzowski Interns with CBC RadioFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lily Mills to Begin Four-Month Internship on April 30 Monday, April 16, 2007 Peterborough Trent University is pleased to announce that Lily Mills, a fourth-year cultural studies major who will be graduating this year, has been named as one of four students from across Canada who will spend the summer working with CBC Radio as part of the prestigious Peter Gzowski Internship Program. “This is the best opportunity I can envision for myself at this point in my life,” Ms. Mills said. “I am excited to apply all of the critical and creative thinking I have learned at Trent to the ‘real world’.” Beginning April 30, Ms. Mills will take part in a wof training in the basics of radio production at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto. Following the training, Ms. Mills and the other three students will spend the remainder of their paid internship working with various radio shows across the country, gaining first-hand experience in radio programming. "The Gzowski Internship provides a marvellous opportunity each year for a Trent student to receive excellent training in radio programming and production. The applicant pool from Trent is consistently high, and the selection committee's job is always a difficult one,” said Christine McKinnon, dean of arts and science at Trent. “We wish Lily well in her summer internship, and we look forward to hearing some of the CBC radio programs to which she will contribute." Ms. Mills is an active participant and avid supporter of the arts and culture in Canada. In high school she was interested in pursuing a career in music but when it came to selecting a university program she decided to take a broader approach to the arts by enrolling in Trent’s Cultural Studies program. Throughout her four years at Trent, Ms. Mills has taken every opportunity to explore all of the different branches arts and culture, especially theatre, through her involvement with the Peterborough Theatre Guild. Ms. Mills will graduate from Trent with a degree in cultural studies, specializing in image, sound, and performance, with a minor in business administration. In her third year, she also completed the Concentration in Museum Studies program offered through Fleming College. Created to honour the memory of Peter Gzowski, who died in 2002, the internship program with CBC radio is available to final-year university students at four institutions across Canada that have a link to the well-known author, broadcaster, and columnist. They are: Trent University, McGill University in Montreal, Memorial University in St. John’s, and Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. Peter Gzowski was chancellor at Trent University from 1999-2002. A highly coveted employment opportunity, the CBC Radio Peter Gzowski Internship Program seeks out students who are highly creative, curious about the world, engaged in the community, and have an interest in pursuing a career with public radio.
