New Provincial Funding Announcement Offers Guaranteed Employment for Trent-Fleming Nursing Graduates
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
134 Fourth-Year Nursing Students Expected to Graduate in 2007
Wednesday, February 28, 2007, Peterborough
Yesterday’s announcement by Premier Dalton McGuinty to provide 7.5 months full-time job funding for every Ontario nursing graduate is “great news for the Peterborough area,” according to Dr. Dauna Crooks, director of the Trent-Fleming School of Nursing.
Each of the 134 fourth-year nursing students expected to graduate from Trent University this year would qualify for the newly funded positions. The province will pay for the first six months of full time employment including 3 months orientation while the employer will be responsible for six weeks of funding. This will provide nursing graduates with 7.5 months of valuable clinical experience to allow a smoother transition into available employment in the sponsoring agency.
“This is a truly wonderful opportunity for our students, especially since it’s been hard for graduates to find full time work in this area,” said Dr. Crooks. “The chances of our graduates not working out once employed is very small because they do extremely well in the field.”
New graduates will use an online employment portal on the website www.healthforceontario.ca to apply for full-time jobs posted by healthcare agencies. Government funding is available for positions in hospitals, long-term care facilities, home care, mental health, public health and primary health care sectors who register on the portal.
Trent has already made information about the full-time employment guarantee available for graduating nursing students on the Trent Web CT intranet portal.
