Trent University’s Classics Drama Group to Perform Medea February 27 – March 2

Tickets on Sale Now for Powerful Greek Tragedy

Trent University’s Classics Drama Group will be performing Euripides’ Medea from Tuesday, February 27 through Friday, March 2 at the First Peoples Performance Space in Peter Gzowski College on the Symons Campus.

Euripides’ Medea was first performed at the Theatre of Dionysus in Athens in 431 BC. The tragic play vividly portrays a woman abandoned by her husband, whose revenge shows that "passion is indeed stronger than reason".

At Trent, the play will be performed by the Classics Drama Group (CDG), which was originally launched as a teaching tool to allow students in a course on ancient drama the opportunity to watch and evaluate a Greek play in action. Since the group’s creation in 1993, the Conacher Players, as they have been known since 2001, have become very well known in Peterborough and around the province, performing for audiences at Trinity College, the University of Toronto, and for the Classics departments at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. Trent University is the only university in Canada to have a Classics Drama Group that performs annually.

Medea is directed by three-time CDG director and Trent Classics student, Lucy Dawson. In addition to the Trent students who appear as the majority of actors in the play, several local school children are also involved in the production.

Euripides’ Medea begins Tuesday, February 27 and runs for four nights until Friday, March 2. All performances begin at 8 p.m. and will be held in the First Peoples Performance Space at Peter Gzowski College.
