FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nursing Student Jutta Merilainen Presented with Prestigious Award at November 30 Luncheon in Toronto

Friday, December 1, 2006, Peterborough

Fourth-year Trent nursing student Jutta Merilainen was honoured as a top female scholar-athlete by Ontario University Athletics (OUA) at the fourth annual Women of Influence Luncheon held on Thursday, November 30 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The event was hosted by Cassie Campbell, former captain of the Canadian women's national ice hockey team.

“It was a truly amazing experience and so inspirational,” Ms. Merilainen said, reflecting on the awards ceremony. “Cassie Campbell’s speech was very motivational. I hope that through this recognition I am also able to challenge others to reach their goals. It is not about me, it is about being able to share my experiences.”

Ms. Merilainen is Trent University’s star cross-country runner; she leads the pack with consistent top ten finishes. In addition to being a top student and athlete, she is also a mother of four children ranging in age from three to 12 years. She commutes to Trent every day from her home near Trenton, Ontario. Ms. Merilainen was also named a Trent Academic All-Canadian at a ceremony on November 23.

The Women of Influence Awards honour female student athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports and fields of study. The OUA profiled athletes from 18 universities across Ontario at the ceremony.
