Heading into their first gold medal final on Sunday, the Trent Excalibur Men’s Rugby team is also celebrating the fact that one of their players, final-year student Graham Abbott, has been named Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men’s Rugby Athlete of the Week.
Mr. Abbott played a key role in the Excalibur’s semi-final victory against the Algonquin Thunder on Saturday, November 10, scoring 12 points (two tries and a convert) to lift Trent to their 22-12 win, helping secure an unprecedented 7-0 season record.
"I have made so many friends through varsity sport and the highlights of my time at school all revolve around varsity at Trent,” said Mr. Abbott. “After playing five seasons here, winning athlete of the week is a great way to end my final season. I’m hoping we can add a gold medal to this great season as well.”
Originally from Consecon, Ontario, Mr. Abbott is studying History at Trent University. This is his fifth and final year with the Excalibur men’s Rugby team. Prior to coming to Trent, he played with the Belleville Bulldogs and for five years with the Trenton High School Tigers.
As OCAA East Division Champions, the Trent Excalibur will battle another undefeated team, OCAA West Division Champs the Humber Hawks, for the gold medal title on home turf at the Justin Chiu Stadium at Trent University on Sunday, November 18 at 1pm. All members of the community are encouraged to come out and cheer on the home team. Admission is free.
