What’s Involved in a Field Placement
• Field placements are normally unpaid, part-time work, approximately one day per week
• Field placements involve a minimum of 160 hours to a maximum of 420 hours
• Start dates can be in September, January, or May
• Students are the top of their class, requiring a minimum cumulative average of 72%
• Field placements are usually local to the Peterborough, Durham and surrounding areas
• Field placement hours can be in person, remote or a hybrid work arrangement
• Students will submit a resume and go through an interview process like any other candidate
• Job postings must be submitted eight weeks prior to the start of the Field placements term
• Employers are expected to complete an evaluation at the end of the Field placements

How to hire a field placement student
You can post a position on our Student Job Board or email zanmorgandixon@trentu.ca.
Recruitment process
STEP 1: POST YOUR FIELD PLACEMENT POSITION
There are two ways to post a field placement position:

Visit the Job Board at https://ccr.trentu.ca/employer/employer.htm. Create an employer account or log into your account (if you already have one). Use the job posting form to enter the details for the field placement opportunity. Once your posting has been submitted, we will publish the opportunity or contact you for more information. Once approved, the position will be live on the Student Job Board for the Master of Management students to view.

Email your posting directly to us at zanmorgandixon@trentu.ca and we will post the opportunity on the Student Job Board for you. We will reach out to you if we have any questions. You will receive an email with your account information and confirming your job postings.
STEP 2: REVIEW APPLICATIONS
Once the deadline of your field placement opportunity has been reached, a bundle containing the names of the candidates along with their applications will be sent to you. Applications may consist of cover letters and or resumes as per your request.
STEP 3: INTERVIEW CANDIDATES
Once you have screened and selected the candidates, reach out to the candidates directly and schedule interviews.
STEP 4: MAKE AN OFFER
Once you have selected the student(s) you would like to hire, please reach out to the successful student and make the offer then inform the Employer Liaison, Zan Morgan-Dixon by email at zanmorgandixon@trentu.ca.
STEP 5: FINALIZE
Once an offer of employment has been accepted by a student, the Program Employer Liaison will contact you about Risk Management paperwork that must be signed by you and the University to be kept on file.

IS THERE A DEADLINE TO ADVERTISE A FIELD PLACEMENT JOB AD?

Submit your posting at least 8 weeks prior to the start of the term (September, January, May)
HOW LONG IS A FIELD PLACEMENT WORK TERM?

Each field placement work term is 4 months and students are required to do a minimum of 160 hours to a maximum of 420 hours. It follows the same schedule as our academic calendar:

Summer: May through August

Winter: January through April
AS AN EMPLOYER, WHY DO I HAVE TO SUBMIT AN EMPLOYER FEEDBACK FORM DURING A WORK TERM?

MSMG 5000Y integrated workplace project is the final course for the students and for the experience to be acknowledged on a student’s transcript, the same academic deadlines for grades submission are followed. Students who successfully complete their field placement hours will be able to complete their program.
WHAT ARE MY RESPONSIBILITIES AS AN EMPLOYER?

To sign risk management paperwork (Student Workplace agreement (renewed every 5 years) and Letter to Placement Employers (renewed annually)).

To provide students with meaningful employment related to their field of study.

The employer’s Workplace Accident and Injury insurance coverage is applicable to students as they are considered employees during their field placement.

To provide accurate, informative job descriptions to stimulate student interest.
-
To provide an orientation to familiarize students with their work environments, job responsibilities, organizational policies and procedures, etc.

To develop a work plan and discuss it with the student.

To provide students with supervision and training.

To provide feedback on the students’ performance.

To advise the Employer Liaison immediately of any job-related performance issues (e.g. poor attendance, punctuality, quality of work).
WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE STUDENT?

To participate fully in the field placement process.

To conduct themselves in a professional and ethical manner through the application and hiring process, as well as on the job.

To adhere to all Trent University policies and procedures including all field placement guidelines.

To conform to company policies and procedures and follow safety rules explicitly.

To advise their Program Employer Liaison of any work term concerns they cannot resolve with their employer.

To complete all required assignments and documentation.
WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF TRENT UNIVERSITY?

To provide a qualified faculty member or work placement coordinator to oversee and respond to issues relating to the work placement(s) and provide contact information for relevant staff at Trent University.

To ensure each student is registered and in good standing at Trent University.

To direct each student to abide by all relevant policies and procedures of the Placement Host.

Provide the Placement Host with information about relevant University policies and procedures.
