Neil Emery
Vice-President Research and International, Trent University
Moderator
Dr. Emery is a full professor in the Biology Department at Trent with degrees from Queen’s University (B.Sc.) and the University of Calgary (Ph.D.).
He has worked for international agricultural institutes in Australia and France and continues his work at Trent University, with industry partnerships, towards improved crop yields and productivity.
Barbara Finlayson-Pitts '66
University of California Irvine Distinguished Professor
Professor of Chemistry and UCI Distinguished Professor, Dr. Finlayson-Pitts brings expertise in laboratory experiments and a broad background in atmospheric chemistry. She has been Director of the AirUCI Institute, initially funded by the National Science Foundation, since its inception in 2004. Dr. Finlayson-Pitts is the recipient of a number of national awards in the U.S., including the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Advances in Environmental Science & Technology and election to the National Academy of Sciences.
Richard Fleming '68
Senior Research Scientist, Canadian Forest Service
Dr. Fleming uses his unique background in mathematics, physics, and ecology to examine forest insect outbreak systems, their interactions with forest fire, and how climate change affects them. This innovative research led to him becoming a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC is the leading international body for the assessment of climate change and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
Dan Longboat '70
Director of the Indigenous Environmental Studies Department, Trent University
Dr. Longboat, also known as Roronhiake:wen, is Mohawk and from the Six Nations of the Grand River. He is Director of the Indigenous Environmental Studies Program at Trent. Dr. Longboat is known for his Traditional Haudenosaunee knowledge and has taught Mohawk culture at Trent in addition to his work in Indigenous Environmental Studies. He was the first Director of Studies of the Ph.D. program.
Suresh Narine '91
Director of Trent Centre for Biomaterials Research, Director of Institute of Applied Science and Technology (Guyana), Ontario Research Chair in Green Chemistry and Engineering and Senior NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Lipid-Derived Biomatierials
Dr. Narine believes that working within a cradle-to-cradle lifecycle has untold potential for real societal change. Sometimes the prospect of truly renewable materials helping to re-shape the face and functionality of the world around us has Dr. Narine feeling a bit heady. Maintaining a connection with his native Guyana, Dr. Narine is the director of their National Institute of Applied Science and Technology. In 2011 was named one of “Canada’s Top 40 under 40”.
