As a First Generation student at Trent University there are many supports to help you to campus.
Who is a First Generation Student?
First Generation students are the first in their family to attend a post-secondary institution. More specifically, students who have parents who did not complete a post-secondary (college or university) degree or did not attend a post-secondary (university or college) institution are considered 'first generation students'.
Supports for First Generation Students
The Office of Student Affairs offers a mentoring program for incoming First Generation students. The Rebound Program connects incoming students who self-enrol in our program with an upper year student mentor. Students are encouraged to meet once a week in order to get the most out of the program.
In collaboration with the Wellness Centre, the Office of Student Affairs is proud to present On Track - a 6 week wellness program with workshops designed to help students learn skills to boost their overall wellbeing. These workshops are facilitated by two Trent Staff members: Krista Kermer, Student Retention Programs Coordinator, and Kate MacIsaac, Campus Mental Health Strategist. Participants are also assigned to smaller groups led by a Rebound Guide to discuss group activities.
All self-identified First Generation students also receive an email from an upper year student connecting them to the Rebound Program or to other resources on campus.
Lastly, there is always an Orientation Week event at Trent specifically for First Generation students connecting them to other First-Generation upper year students and/or faculty/staff who work at Trent.
