2021: Dr Feyzi Baban and Dr. Chris Beyers - Forced Migration, Citizenship and Migrant Solidarity Movements
Learn more about the current state of our global refugee crisis from IDST Faculty Dr. Feyzi Babin and Dr. Chris Beyers, along with some words from our Trent WUSC Student Refugee Program. Pre-registration required.
In recent years many states have implemented policies explicitly restricting the legal rights of refugees and introduced migration controls as a response to growing right-wing movements within their borders. Restrictions on international refugee laws and migration controls take many forms, some of which are designed to strip migrants of their legal rights. Simultaneously emerging along with these restrictions is citizen-led migrant solidarity movements. These movements have emerged in many states to challenge restrictive laws and policies and counter exclusionary and racist visions of right-wing movements. The talk will focus on these simultaneous developments in migration control policies and migrant solidarity movements by focusing on examples from Europe and Latin America.
