Established in memory of the late Professor Peter Barrett, and his wife Karen, this prize is awarded on completion of Chemistry-Environmental Science 2620H and 3610H to a student with outstanding performance in Environmental Chemistry.
As a Professor at Trent for more than 30 years, Peter’s gifted teaching touched the lives of many students in his First-Year Chemistry and Environmental Sciences classes. As a talented researcher and patented inventor he was elected Fellow of the Chemistry Institute of Canada, and served the University community as Dons-in-Residence of Trail College, Department Chair for a decade, and then another decade as Trent’s Dean of Science. Karen helped secure the creation of Trent’s Bata Library ’67-’69 and its first collection. Karen also helped found the Art Gallery of Peterborough in 1974, later being named Peterborough’s Volunteer of the Year.
