Research Thesis, Directed Research in Biological Science, and Community-Based Research Project Forms & Application Processes
If you would like to have your research thesis/directed research in biological science/community based research project credit(s) count towards a Specialization in the Health Sciences, this approval form needs to be included with your application.
Research Thesis Application Process
The following is the application process for students that are interested in doing a research thesis through BIOL 4020D or 4010Y. Any questions regarding this process should be directed to the Biology Department Office.
- Student finds a willing Supervisor and fills out the BIOL 4010Y/4020D Application form with their Supervisor. Their Supervisor signs the form.
- Form submitted to the Biology Department Office via biology@trentu.ca
- If the application is approved by the department, a registration request will be submitted to the Office of the Registrar.
Directed Research in Biological Sciences Course Application Process
The following is the Directed Research in Biological Sciences course (BIOL 3901H, 3902H, and 4900Y) application process from the start to the Dean's Office for approval. Any questions regarding the process should be directed to the Biology Department Office.
- Student approaches faculty member about doing a Directed Research in Biological Science course with them and provides an unofficial transcript to verify that they have the required prerequisites.
- Faculty puts together course outline/syllabus for the course. This should include such items as meeting times, grade distribution, and assurance that 25% of course grade is known by the drop deadline.
- Student fills out the Directed Research in Biological Sciences application form with input from the faculty member.
- Application form and course outline/syllabus are sent to biology@trentu.ca
- AAA verifies the student has the prerequisites and then forwards the application form and course outline/syllabus to the Directed Research in Biological Sciences Course Coordinator for review and approval.
- Once the AAA receives the approval, the application form and course outline/bibliography is sent to the Chair (or designate) for approval and signature on the application form. This is then returned to the AAA.
- The AAA sends in the signed application form, the course outline/syllabus, and the student’s transcript to the Dean’s Office for approval and processing.
- Once approved, the Dean's Office will submit a registration request to the Office of the Registrar.
Community-Based Research (CBR) Project Course Application Process
The following is the CBR project course application process from start to Dean's Office for approval. Any questions regarding the process can be directed to the Placement Officer or the Biology Department Office.
- Interested student applies to available projects through the Community Research Centre (CRC). On the CRC Student Application form, select the BIOL course that the project satisfies (BIOL 4891H for half year projects, BIOL 4890Y for full year projects). Submit the application to the CRC.
- The student finds a supervisor who writes a letter of support, drafts up a syllabus (templates available), and completes the Dean’s Office Reading Course/CBR Project Application Form. The Dean’s Office Reading Course/CBR Project Application form will need to be signed by both the student and the supervising faculty member.
- The student then submits a copy of the CRC Student Application form, the project description, a copy/screenshot of their unofficial transcript, letter of support, syllabus and Reading Course/CBR Project Application Form to the Biology Department Office. If the project is through Ulinks, a Ulinks support letter will also be required.
- The Placement Officer reviews, then sends the CBR documents to Biology Department Community-based Research Project Coordinator for approval that the project is appropriate for a BIOL credit.
- If approved, the Research Project Coordinator sends the CBR documents to the Biology Department Chair for their signature, cc’ing the Placement Officer.
- The Placement Officer sends the fully signed Dean’s Office Reading Course/CBR Project Application form along with all supporting documentation to the Dean’s Office for approval, CCing biology@trentu.ca.
