Major and Minor Sport Descriptions

Major Sports

Canoeing:

Campers will learn about all aspects of canoeing, including; learning the parts of the canoe, names of various strokes and techniques, as well as how to safely enter and exit the canoe, and balance the canoe while paddling. Campers will also learn emergency procedures on the water and will have the opportunity to take part in a canoe over canoe rescue.

Basketball:

Our basketball elective is a non-competitive program for campers to gain knowledge of technique, teamwork, and game rules. Experienced counselors will coach campers in dribbling, shooting, and passing techniques, as well as offensive and defensive strategies. By the end of the session, campers should be able to demonstrate fair play amongst teammates, as well as a thorough knowledge of the game.

Mountain Biking:

In this intro to mountain biking, campers will learn about riding with appropriate equipment, using traffic signals, and proper trail etiquette. Campers will also gain knowledge on basic bike maintenance, and appropriate distances between bikers when riding. (Please note that campers must bring their own bike. If this is not possible, please contact the camp office at 705-748-1670).

Soccer:

The soccer program at Excalibur Camp is a non-competitive elective for campers to gain knowledge of technique, teamwork, and game rules. Experienced counselors will coach campers in shooting and passing techniques, as well as how to move through the field while maintaining control over the ball. By the end of the session, campers should be able to demonstrate fair play amongst teammates, as well as a thorough knowledge of the game.

Minor Sports

Pool Games:

Throughout the session, counselors will lead camper through adaptations of popular camp games such as volleyball, basketball, treasure hunts, and tag games - in the water! Campers registered in Pool Games will also participate in relay races and obstacle courses, as well as group games that reinforce swimming skills.

Nature Sports:

Campers will participate in a combination of oudoor and team building activities. As a group, campers will take part in rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, as well as leadership initiatives. Campers will also learn orienteering skills such as how to read a map and compass. By the end of the session, campers will gain knowledge in hiking etiquette, climbing skills, and mountain biking safety.

Forest Games:

In this active minor sport, campers will learn to understand fairplay and cooperation through a variety of group games, including; capture the flag, stones, and fireball. Counselors will teach campers about the surrounding environment, through activities like the Survival Game, so that campers might develop an appreciation for the outdoors.

Court Sports:

Fairplay and teamwork becomes a prominent theme for campers as they participate in various activities such as basketball, volleyball, European handball, and badminton. Throughout the session, campers will develop awareness of proper form when it comes to serving, dribbling, and stroke techniques. 

Field Sports:

Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, and Flag Football are only a few of the exciting activities included in our Field Sports elective. By participating in these activities, campers will develop teamwork and organizational skills, as well as thorough knowledge of game rules.

Stick and Club Sports:

In Stick and Club, campers will learn about good sportmanship while taking part in sports like golf, ball hockey and lacrosse. By the end of the season, campers will have a basic knowledge of rules, score keeping, and safe use of equipment.

Ball Games:

In this elective, campers will take part in exciting, fast-paced indoor games, while developing hand-eye coordination skills as well as learning to cooperate and strategize with teammates. Activities include but are not limited to; dodgeball, flinch, tchoukball, and Euorpean handball.
