Established in 1974, the Anthropology Graduate Program is one of the longest standing graduate programs at Trent University. In addition to providing a thorough grounding in anthropological theory and research methods as a preparation for professional careers and/ or continuing study at the PhD level, our program produces graduates with sufficient depth and breadth of outlook to meet the need for resourcefulness, versatility and adaptability in modern society. MA and MSc options are available.
Accelerated Master’s in Anthropology
The accelerated master’s program provides students with an opportunity to complete a portion of their MA or MSc coursework during the fourth year of their undergraduate degree. Students are required to complete an undergraduate thesis with a faculty member that is affiliated with the anthropology graduate program that would also supervise their master’s thesis. It is not possible to complete an undergraduate thesis with one faculty member and pursue graduate level research with another on the accelerated track. A minimum GPA of 80% is required to participate in the accelerated master’s program.
How to Apply?
Preparation for the accelerated master’s should begin at the end of the third year. The first step is to identify a prospective supervisor from the list of graduate faculty. Contact your prospective supervisor to determine if they would be willing to supervise your BA or BSc thesis and tell them that you are interested in the accelerated master’s option.
In your fourth year, you would register for ANTH 4020D (standard undergraduate thesis) and 1.0 5000 level credits (excluding ANTH 5000Y, 5100Y, 5500Y) under the supervision of your undergraduate thesis supervisor. These 5000 level credits would be directly related to both your undergraduate and graduate thesis topics. Completing the 5000 level courses does not guarantee entry to the anthropology graduate program and students are still subjected to the normal admissions process. On the accelerated track the undergraduate and graduate supervisor must be the same faculty member.
Paperwork for the undergraduate thesis and the accelerated master’s must be submitted to the department of anthropology and the anthropology graduate program before May 15 of the year prior to completing ANTH 4020D.
