Symons Series for Graduate Students
- Date: Thursday, November 21, 2024 - 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Building: Bagnani Hall
Please join us once again for a Symons Series event on November 21st at 7:30 pm in Bagnani Hall, Traill College. Once more, we have the pleasure of having two presenters, one from the sciences and one from the humanities.
Our first presenter of the night shall be the fantastic Erin Matula. Erin is a M.Sc. student wading into the chemistry of water and wildfire, discovering how fire carves headwater stream composition. She got her start at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, and since then, swapped Great Lakes shores for alder jungles and stream samples. Whether on the trails or in the lab, she's drawn to the elemental—the dance of fire and water, earth and snow—seeking the balance of chemistry in each.
Secondly, we shall hear from the insightful Oscar Siler. Oscar Siler is a 2nd year M.A. student in History under the supervision of Dr. Finis Dunaway. Prior to Trent, Oscar completed a B.A. at McGill University with a double Major in History and Anthropology. Oscar is passionate about Environmental History and his current research focuses on the history of waterways and water infrastructure. Growing up on the Island of Montreal, Oscar has been surrounded by waterway infrastructure and its nationalist discourse his whole life. Due to this, he believes understanding the complexities of waterways and their cultural impact is a crucial step moving forward as Canada continues to build and develop water infrastructure projects.
Join the discussion and enjoy snacks!
