Soaking in every doctor's chart, operating room procedure, and medical diagnosis with everything she's got, Camille Quang is using her Trent internship experience to prepare for a successful career in medicine.
What began as an evening of browsing the internet, quickly turned into a transformational summer abroad at Hong Kong Baptist University for Psychology student Maisie Glofcheski.
"The experiential learning opportunities I've had at Trent have by far been the most enriching experiences I've had during my undergraduate career," says Trent Browett, fourth-year International Development student.
Trent University's study abroad program transported Trent alumna Jennifer Boyce '10 from Peterborough to a remote Indigenous village in Thailand, and ultimately to a life-changing internship at the United Nations.
Masters in Sustainability Studies student, Shirin Nuesslein, is finding collaborative solutions to food insecurity, a pressing issue in many Inuit households of Canada's North.
"Today's university students want more than a degree — they want hands-on experience," says Dr. Neil Emery, vice-president of Research and Innovation at Trent University.
"In nearly every one of our Indigenous Environmental Studies/Science classes — from lectures to workshops, to seminars and assignments there is an experiential component introduced to students learning," explains Dr. Dan Longboat.
Graduate students enrolled in the CREATE Enviro program at Trent will have a leg up in the job market when they graduate, thanks to an applied experiential approach that emphasizes skills development.
Pottery and figurines, coins and stone tools – just a few of the treasures unearthed from ancient civilizations in Crete, Greece by Trent undergraduate students this past summer.
Helping older people has always been an interest for second-year Nursing student Laura Christie, but her passion began to really take shape when she started work at a dementia care home.
Getting involved, and undertaking an internship, all while pursuing a degree at Trent, prepared recent Trent graduate Shealin Owens to venture into the work world after graduation with success.
