Windows 10, Wait Awhile!
Good Afternoon All,
Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 10, was made publically available on July 29th. Since Microsoft is offering it free of charge for many users, and it includes several significant improvements, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding its release. This new version of Windows sees a fundamental change to its look and feel, in addition to what’s under the hood. One of these changes includes the upgrade process itself, which is now simpler than ever. Early adopters of Windows 10 can upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 almost as easily as installing monthly Windows updates.
However, in order to prevent potential data loss and software incompatibilities, IT strongly urges its users to wait a while before upgrading. Manufacturers need time to release Windows 10 compatible drivers and updates to their software, and Microsoft will likely release fixes and tweaks post-launch. The free upgrade offer will last until the 29th of July 2016, so you have plenty of time to take advantage of it.
IT Services has started to evaluate Windows 10 within Trent’s IT environment, but until software and hardware vendors release updates, we cannot fully test key services to make sure they will function as expected in Windows 10. Compatibility with Trent’s IT systems need to be ensured before Windows 10 is deemed acceptable for use at the University.
If you choose to upgrade to Windows 10, keep in mind that we can only support your use on a best-efforts basis, and some Trent IT services may not work as expected (or work at all).
We will send up a follow-up bulletin in the future to update you on the status of our evaluation.
Thank You
