At Trent, you’ll learn by doing.
Language and linguistics courses are offered in Peterborough and Durham by experienced and highly qualified faculty. These experts in second-language learning bring innovative approaches to the classroom and to on-line offerings. With just one course, you’ll be reading, speaking and writing in a new language and exploring the culture of speakers of that language.
Small class sizes make for a motivational environment as you interact with your instructors, collaborate with your classmates, build friendships, and support one another. Our language lab and supplementary audiovisual resources help you practise your language skills in authentic situations, coached by native speakers.
Trent prides itself on its dynamic extra-curricular communities, so you can take your language learning outside the classroom and one step further by choosing from an array of clubs and groups. The annual Language and Linguistics Festival is a celebration of language learning at Trent, and will highlight the richness of this field of study through guest speakers, cultural activities and demonstrations, and films. Or join the various language clubs to practise your speaking, get to know other students, and learn about the cultures in which various languages are spoken. An exciting new venture, the Linguistics Symposium, will bring together speakers with interdisciplinary interests in linguistic topics to share their passion for that field.
You can also continue your language learning by spending time abroad or in a French-speaking region of Canada. Study-abroad opportunities are available in a range of countries through the International Program. Or if you are a French major, take advantage of Trent’s almost 40 years of experience offering the Year Abroad Program in Nantes, France.
