Questions
- Why did you decide to travel abroad?
-
I wanted to expand my knowledge of North and Indigenous Peoples and examine the effects of climate change.
- Why did you choose to study at The University of Alaska? How did you learn about it?
-
I was taking courses involving Circumpolar Studies and Professor Heather Nicol and Kate Logan reached out to the students to allow for this unique opportunity to explore our North firsthand.
- What was your experience like? What are some of the differences & similarities with Trent?
-
I feel that Trent and the University of Alaska could easily adapt to each other and create programming where students could attend a semester abroad. There are so many opportunities through environmental research that is so desperately needed. Climate change affects the North first and both of our programs, the Circumpolar North and the Environmental studies offered through U of Alaska, blend so well together. Through the research center there are internships offered right now. Values, respect and expectations are united with both Universities. I highly recommend a continued working relationship with the two universities for the future. Both are current and are at the forefront of technology and information for our future environmental and economic issues facing our North.
- What did you find was the most challenging/difficult while abroad?
-
Trying to fit everything in our 1-week timeline was the most challenging. There were so many learning opportunities that presented itself it would have been perfect to have a little more time.
- In your opinion, what would you say are the benefits of studying abroad?
-
There are so many benefits to name. I would say it allows you to dispel myths or preconceived notions by experiencing life firsthand and expanding your knowledge outside of books and the internet. Being able to touch, feel, explore, listen and absorb the surroundings there is nothing better than that.
- What was one of your favourite memories from your time abroad?
-
There were so many memories that I carry with me every day and I have developed friendships that have continued. Every opportunity we were given I am so grateful for.
- If someone told you they were thinking about studying abroad but weren’t convinced they should, what would you tell them?
-
DO IT. There are no other unique opportunities to network, learn and expand personally and professionally. You learn better and more through experiencing life, culture, and the environment firsthand. Speaking with the local people there's no book or internet website that can allow you to delve into that. That contact is necessary, and everyone should give themselves the opportunity for personal growth. It has made me a better student and more passionate regarding the North.
