Name: Matthew Ackerman

Exchange: Stellenbosch University, South Africa - Summer Term

Questions
- Why did you decide to travel abroad?
-
To experience the Leadership Program in a different country and South Africa was of particular interest due to rich history and familial ties.
- Why did you choose to study at Stellenbosch University? How did you learn about it?
-
I chose Stellenbosch University because it is a well-known University and I have family members whom I had never met who attended the University.
- What was your experience like? What are some of the differences & similarities with Trent?
-
It was an incredible experience. Much like Trent in the friendliness of students and the approachability of the Professors. Incredibly rich campus of history. Beautiful meaningful buildings. Outdoor learning experiences and environment is grander than Trent. Everything was close by; it really is a university town. The workload was a good pace, allowing time to complete the work and experience the country. The workload was also incorporated within the experiences. Difficulty was experiencing Loadshedding, something we do not experience in Canada. Losing electrical power makes it interesting to work. One needs to make sure you have backup power and pay attention to when the power outages will be. You really don’t appreciate what you have until it is gone.
- What did you find was the most challenging/difficult while abroad?
-
Loadshedding as it is not like power going out for a couple hours occasionally it is a daily event. Something we are very fortunate not to experience but the experience creates appreciation.
- In your opinion, what would you say are the benefits of studying abroad?
-
Studying abroad provides cultural awareness, learning in an environment different than your own. Experiencing another University and learning from the Professors at the host University. The lecturers at Stellenbosch were incredible. Experiencing the culture, food, lifestyle, and land, provides an incredible education on its own.
- What was one of your favourite memories from your time abroad?
-
I have so many favourite memories, but one would be experiencing the Game Reserve in South Africa with our group. Being up-close to the big 5 game on the terrain and experiencing the meal at the game park amazing.
- If someone told you they were thinking about studying abroad but weren’t convinced they should, what would you tell them?
-
Go!!! Do it! I would let them know Trent really prepares you for the experience and is there to ensure you have all the steps in place. It will be the opportunity of a lifetime. The only regret you will have will be not going!
