Outgoing Board Chair Stephen Kylie Celebrated as a Strategic Leader in Time of Growth
At its final meeting of the academic year, Trent University’s Board of Governors recognized the legacy of Stephen Kylie ’72 as he departs from his role as chair of the Board, effective June 30, 2019 – the third Trent alumnus to hold the title in Trent’s history.
Mr. Kylie has served as chair of the Trent Board of Governors since 2017 and has been governor on the Board for the past six years, during which time he also chaired the finance & property, and executive committees, and served on all Board committees. Mr. Kylie’s strategic leadership and stewardship has served Trent well during a period of growth where the University has undertaken a number of complex initiatives including the Student Centre, Bata Library transformation, Cleantech Commons, and most recently, the capital project that will see the Durham GTA campus expand. Throughout his time with Trent, Mr. Kylie was an enthusiastic champion of Board participation in philanthropy.
“During his time as Board chair, Stephen has brought a keen understanding to strategic challenges facing the University,” noted Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor at Trent. “His strong community-building skills have been critical in advancing relationships with stakeholders, including the City of Peterborough. Stephen’s skill and dedication has us poised for success moving forward.”
An alumnus of Trent University, Mr. Kylie is a prominent member of the Peterborough community, and is well known for his advocacy, community engagement and volunteerism. Outside of the Trent community he serves in a variety of roles including chair of the Peterborough Poverty Reduction Network, chair of the Mount Community Centre, past president of the Peterborough-Kawartha Federal Liberal Association, and, as a member of the Rotary Club of Peterborough, co-chair of the Rotary Victoria Day Fireworks and Family Night.
Armand La Barge ’95, also an alumnus of Trent University, has been appointed to fill the role of chair of the Board of Governors effective July 1, 2019. Mr. La Barge brings an impressive record of leadership and engagement on critical social issues, having served on the Board of Governors since 2015 with leadership on a variety of committees.
