Sara Taylor ’10, B.A., International Development and Gender and Women, Hampton, ON
Sara Taylor knows she has the power to change peoples’ lives for the better, a conviction that was strengthened at Trent. In her first year, Sara walked into the Gender Women and Studies 1000 course, fell in love with the subject and consequently pursued a joint major in International Development and Gender and Women.
“For me, these two areas of study are the perfect combination to use my personal experiences to gain insight about the society I live in,” said Sara. “Engaged professors, classmates and reading and research have all contributed to development of my learning and interests.”
Through her studies Sara is proving that she is committed to facilitate change. She and a team of students worked with Dr. Lynne Davis, professor and program director of the Ph.D. Program in Indigenous Studies, on an initiative to transform relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. “There are many moments like this, in which a professor has challenged, supported and encouraged me to gain a higher understanding. I believe that with my degree, I will continue to engage and learn about the world that I live in.”
Sara’s academic success earned her several scholarships and a consistent post on the Dean’s Honour Roll. She also received many awards for her valuable contributions to the Trent community including her work in Student Orientation, the Career Centre and as Don and Learning and Living Advisor in Gzowski College. She believes these extra-curricular experiences helped her to become a better listener, learner and facilitator within the Trent community which has also been home for her. “It is a community in which the classmates, professors, and university staff work together to build a space of growth and opportunity,” she said.
