Lori Mosienko ’10, B.Sc., Nursing, Ottawa, ON
Lori’s passion for a nursing career was ignited while she was working in an administrative role at the BC Center for Disease Control in Vancouver. She enjoyed working with the public but knew that she needed to take her career toward a more hands-on, caregiving role. “Over time, my fascination with the front-line work grew, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it,” said Lori. “I honed in on nursing, wanting the intellectual and physical challenges it offered.”
After moving to Peterborough with her family, Lori took the plunge and formally began her nursing education at Trent as a mature student. The variety of courses and clinical placements provided by Trent sparked her interest in community health, acute and critical care nursing, and the approachable professors provided support. She recalls the experience of attending the 2012 CASN Nursing Research Conference in Toronto with Professor Ann MacLeod to present a community-based project, as an excellent opportunity for professional development.
“Dr. MacLeod challenged me to think about nursing beyond the confines of hospital walls and definitions of illness and disease,” said Lori. “She brought to light the significance of the social determinants of health and the reality of policy impacts on population health.”
Lori’s success as a student was validated with the Otonabee College Prize for best academic performance over a three-year period. She was also recognized as an Otonabee College Scholar. Lori plans to work in the Peterborough area, and has high hopes for her patient care. “For those I work with, I hope to provide comfort, help them navigate their health challenges and work to create environments conducive to well-being.”
