2014 Graduate Profiles Jason Mann ’10, B.Sc., Forensic Science and Psychology, Cobourg, ON
From the moment Jason listened to a guest lecturer from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office in a first-year Forensic Science course, he knew that a career as a forensic fire investigator was for him. Trent University offered Jason the chance to participate in an experiential learning project through the Trent Centre for Community-Based Education that would help him to make that dream a reality. “In the forensic science field, you learn from professors with an academic background, as well as those who have (practical) experience,” said Jason. “Learning from these two types of professors really enhances the learning experience.” In his fourth year, Jason completed a research project with Peterborough Fire Services, analyzing home smoke alarm programs to create a list of best practices and recommendations to shape future public education and safety programs. Not only was Jason an excellent student, but he was also an avid supporter of the student community, serving as a House Council member at Otonabee College. He was honoured to serve as a student representative on a hiring committee for an incoming professor. “This opportunity was certainly a highlight of my time at Trent, as I was able to work with the Forensic Science professors extremely closely,” said Jason. “I felt as though I was a colleague rather than a student. The experience had a tremendous positive impact on my time here at Trent.” This summer Jason will launch his career by applying for positions with police forces and the Canadian Border Services Agency, in order to gain the investigative policing experience required by the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal. Jason feels Trent equipped him well to pursue his fiery passion. “Trent University had a huge role in making me the person that I am,” he said. “I know that wherever I go in life, the experiences I have had at Trent will certainly help me along the way.” Awards and Scholarships received at Trent University:
