April Lawson ’12, B.Ed., Consecutive Bachelor of Education Program, Peterborough, ON
April Lawson is not afraid to dream big in her hopes that her students will do wonderful things. That belief is held by Mitch Champagne, who was April’s practicum advisor during her B.Ed. at Trent. April’s professors, colleagues and students all recognize that April has found her true calling at the head of the classroom. With future plans to work with primary and junior students, April taught her grade one students with emotion and compassion during her hands-on teaching experience.
“After finishing my first practicum in the B.Ed. program, I knew educating children would be a lifelong passion,” said April. “Eighty-one in-school teaching days later, I never once felt like I was going to ‘work’. Providing students opportunities to grow holistically-physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually and observing their growth is truly amazing.”
Her involvement in Trent’s Environmental Eco-Mentorship program had particular impact on her. “It was a wonderful experience which furthered my interest and awareness of environmental conservation,” she said. “I learned invaluable ecological teaching strategies that I’m very excited to share with students.” She is grateful for the support she found at Trent from fellow teacher candidates, instructors and mentors like Mr. Champagne.
April’s dedication and academic success were recognized by the 2014 Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) award. While at Trent, April also participated in many professional development opportunities, such as attending a developmental education conference as a student representative of OECTA; completing a self-directed alternative practicum in Early Intervention Special Education; and achieving certification as a Behaviour Management Systems Practitioner.
While applying to school boards this summer, April will continue to build her skills as she begins qualification courses in intermediate mathematics.
