Lindsay Dixon '10, B.A., Psychology, Peterborough, ON
Bagnani Medal Recipient
Long before Lindsay became a successful part-time, mature student at Trent, she held a life-long interest in visual arts and psychology. She fuelled those dual passions by working in mental health support services, training as a social service worker and studying Expressive Art Therapy (EXAT). Now as a Trent graduate, she has been awarded the Professor Gilbert Bagnani Medal for high overall standing in the General program.
Lindsay feels that her academic studies in Psychology were a natural complement to her work experience and keen interest in mental health rehabilitation and EXAT. “During my time at Trent, my interest in psychological research grew alongside my work in mental health, as I was able to make connections between research and clinical interventions,” she said. Lindsay credits the encouragement of Dr. Deborah Kennett and her teachings in Advanced Statistics for helping Lindsay to appreciate the value of statistics and research methods and to also develop her skills and confidence as a Psychology student.
This fall, Lindsay will return to Trent to pursue her undergraduate thesis, and also plans to apply to Trent’s graduate program in Psychology. Until then she will continue her work in mental health services as a social services worker. Lindsay feels the roles of both a working professional and Trent student go hand in hand. “By working in the mental health field while pursuing my degree, I saw a direct relationship between the concepts I was learning and the work I do,” said Lindsay. “As such, I feel as though I am already putting my education to good use. My education in Psychology has helped me do better work.”
