Jennifer Carter ‘09, Honours Bachelor of Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Codrington, ON
Symons Medal Recipient
“Trent is a small university. I feel this allows the professors to be much more accessible and helpful.”
Jennifer’s area of study is biochemistry. Through the assistance of the Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) she has worked extensively on projects including her thesis that involve binding and competition of pharmaceuticals. Her work sparked an interest in studying how drugs are altered in the body after administration, known as pharmacokinetics. In turn she is planning to train as a pharmacist.

“The personal growth I have experienced since starting university has been immense.”
A longstanding love of history brought Ms. Cassandra Chalmers to Trent University in Oshawa. Her history studies will take her to teacher’s college in the fall. Cassandra firmly believes that teaching demands hard work and commitment. Her particular academic interests are History of Caribbean Slavery and European History.

Bagnani Medal Winner
“The city of Peterborough is such a nice place to study.”
Mr. Qingyao Chen is the recipient of the 2013 Bagnani Medal. It is awarded to students in the General program who achieve high overall standing on graduation. Qingyao wants to make a world of difference with his degree in economics by becoming an entrepreneur in international trade in his home country of China. After graduation he will travel throughout Canada before returning to China.

Shayne A. P. Dahl ’10, Master of Arts, Anthropology Graduate Program, Swift Current, SK
Governor-General’s Academic Gold Medal Recipient
“The self-belief I developed at Trent has changed my life for the better.”
As an anthropology graduate student, Mr. Dahl has a particular research interest in ascetic and shamanistic groups. As part of his doctorate studies, Shayne will conduct ethnographic research this summer in northern Japan to study mountain ascetics whose disciplined and restrictive way of life is devoted to cultivating Buddhist enlightenment.

“It was this experience that really solidified my passion for and interest in medicine.”
Michelle’s outstanding academic performance, extensive research experience and interest in the medical applications of chemistry and bio-chemistry, are directing her toward a career in medicine. Her interest in medicine was sparked in second year as she conducted drug-binding research. Now she will begin medical school at Queen’s University in the fall.

Samantha Elliott ’09, Honours Bachelor of Arts, English Literature and Concurrent Education, Markham, ON
“The college system fosters a sense of community amongst students that is unique to the Trent experience.”
An avid reader since childhood, Ms. Samantha Elliott chose to major in English literature and minor in history at Trent University. Her love of literature garnered an entrance scholarship into the university and the Gail Waddington Prize for excellence in the study of poetry. After teacher’s college she hopes to pursue a Master's of English degree in Canadian literature.

“I would encourage everyone who wants to get the most out of their undergrad to come to Trent!”
Ms. Lauren Finney is incorporating her keen interests in health and wellness into her academic studies. Her honours thesis research focussed on the psychological and emotional impact of exercise. After completing her HR Business Administration Certificate at Fleming College she hopes to incorporate her skills to help employees be more productive in the workplace through fitness and health. Ms. Finney has been on the Dean’s List consistently since 2011 and played rugby for Trent.

Mr. Ronald (Jordan) Hurley is a Bagnani Medal recipient which is awarded to students in the General program who achieve high overall standing on graduation. He has completed a double major which unites his diverse interests; a passion for North American and European history, and Computer Studies where he developed strong database and electronic researching skills.

“This was where my view of psychology and research began to be shaped.”
Elsa discovered her research interests in psychology as she worked closely with other students and professors in Trent’s psychology laboratories. She credits her experience as a volunteer research assistant with shaping her view of psychology and research. She is interested in how cognitive functions such as reading and problem solving are influenced by various contexts and individual differences.

Ms. Cedar Lockwood’s goal is to translate her love of languages into a career in teaching at the secondary school level at home or around the globe. She discovered that her Trent education in Linguistics deepened her understanding of learning and teaching new languages.

As a member of the Introductory Seminar Week group and a social representative on the College Cabinet, Mr. Myles Latter learned how to be a leader and effective communicator. He found the accepting environment at Trent an ideal place to take on new challenges and initiatives. He received a rowing award in first year in reward for his hard work and dedication. His love of philosophy was fostered by an inspirational professor and a welcoming classroom.

Susan came to Trent University to complete her Bachelor of Arts in Gender and Women’s Studies and International Development Studies. Her Trent academic career also took her all the way to Ghana where she gained new perspective on the world around her and her role within it. Susan who is an honours student has received many accolades for her volunteer work and academic achievement.

“The learning environment at Trent has significant emphasis on the journey.”
Ethan McDonald’s passion for geography was ignited in first year. He is an officer with the Royal Canadian Artillery and will continue working with the Canadian Forces after graduation. He served as co-president and as an active member of the Trent University Geographical Society where he honed his skills and gave back to students who also enjoy natural sciences and studies. He was awarded the Department of Geography’s Founders’ Prize which reinforced that his academic and community efforts in geography have made a noticeable impact.

“I have come to realize that fields of study can be fluid, and that “interdisciplinarity” is required if we truly wish to tackle environmental problems.”
Ms. Catherine Monaghan sustained an outstanding academic record in high school and throughout her entire environmental studies career at Trent University. After receiving a scholarship for her high marks and various academic awards, she felt valued as a strong student by the Trent community.
Her passions include a love for nature and the environment and the desire to inspire youth with a strong female voice. She is fascinated by how humans and the environment shape each other. She may emulate her professors at Trent as she plans teach at the post-secondary level.

Ha was awarded the Inaugural Justin Chiu Global Citizen Scholarship for her outstanding academic achievements, community services and leadership. Due to the scholarship, Ha feels she was able to pursue undergraduate studies at one of the best liberal arts universities in Canada. She says, “It was my honour to be the first recipient of this generous and prestigious scholarship, which recognized my academic accomplishments and extracurricular activities.”

Ms. Lauren Ostrowski received esteemed recognition for her academic research as well for her meaningful work in the community. A consistent member of the Dean’s list, she was notably rewarded the Community-Based Research Award (2013) for her work with the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service regarding the development of best practices for victim services in their interaction with families of homicide and sudden death.

Ms. Holly Ottenhof has wanted to be a teacher since kindergarten. Her psychology studies within the Queen’s-Trent Concurrent Education program have brought her one significant step closer to her goal. Armed with a solid academic understanding of child and adolescent development, Holly is destined to complete her Bachelor of Education at Queens’ in the fall. She feels the positive experience she had at Trent through her extra-curricular activities also contributed to her success.

“I have had opportunities to work closely with and learn from many wonderful professors and staff at Trent.”
Dr. Casey Ready has completed her Ph.D. in Canadian Studies and is receiving the President’s Medal in the category of Doctor of Philosophy (social sciences and humanities). The medal rewards academic excellence and achievement at the graduate studies level.
Dr. Ready is an accomplished and dedicated social services professional in her own right. While working toward her Ph.D. she was also the Executive Director of a community service agency, Community Counselling & Resource Centre in Peterborough. She took a one-year unpaid leave of absence in 2010-2011 to work full-time on her research and dissertation.

“I am grateful for the opportunities and education I received from Trent University.”
Mr. Chase Reaume is the 2013 recipient of the Trent University President’s Medal. The President’s Medal rewards academic excellence and achievement at the graduate studies level. Following Convocation Chase is planning to apply to medical school in the fall.
After completing his B.Sc. in Forensic Science at Trent, Chase decided to remain at the school to complete his Master of Science in the Environmental and Life Sciences Graduate Program. Throughout his studies he gravitated toward molecular biology and genetics and their use in the study of infectious diseases and other medical issues.

Mr. Keith Crossland is not a typical student. At 78 years old he brought a wealth of experience with him to the Trent University campus. A native of England, Keith obtained a degree in Metallurgy which was followed by a long and successful career in steelmaking abroad and in Canada.
Following his retirement in 1999, his extensive scientific expertise took a backseat to a completely contrasting interest. As he entered Trent in 2000, he unleashed his love for English literature. Retirement left him with a void, and he felt a new academic pursuit was the ideal remedy.

Jonathan Thibault ’09, Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Major in Economics, Minor in International Development Studies, Ottawa, ON
Mr. Jonathan Thibault will be attending graduate school at Queen’s University to study for his Master’s in Economics. At Trent, Jonathan accomplished a great deal while working toward his undergraduate degree in Economics and International Development Studies.
He was repeatedly rewarded with scholarships for achieving consistently high averages. Jonathan also received the Maurice J. Boote Scholarship for receiving the highest cumulative average during his first three years of study within the Economics program at Trent.

Ms. Rachel Allison entered Trent after being rewarded with a scholarship that recognized her outstanding marks in high school. Following graduation from the Psychology program she plans to attend college to study addiction counselling. As her interest in psychology grew while at Trent she was also drawn to other areas such as Women’s Studies.
