Eminent Service Award
Established in 1978, the Eminent Service Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the life of Trent University above and beyond excellence in carrying out their employment or volunteer responsibilities. It is normally awarded at the culmination of service to Trent. The award is presented on behalf of the Board of Governors, acting upon the recommendation of the Senate.
2016 Winners
Trent University is pleased to announce that the 2015 Eminent Service Award
will be presented to Mrs. Marain Leahy and Dr. Peter Dawsonfor their
commitment and dedication to Trent at this year's convocation ceremonies.
Peter Dawson
A member of Trent's Physics department, Dr. Peter Dawson first arrived at Trent in 1965 as a student and was part of the University’s second graduating class. In the summer of 1966 he worked on the construction of Champlain College. He went on to obtain his Masters degree at Trent. He joined Trent's faculty in 1981 and over the years taught courses in Physics, Astronomy, and Computer Studies. During his career, Professor Dawson served on numerous committees and was chair of the Physics Department. He was active on the Trent University Faculty Association, serving as president from 2000 to 2004, and was a member of the Trent University Senate. Prof. Dawson, whose research interests focus on stellar populations and galactic structure, will retire June 30, 2016 and will be honoured with the title of professor emeritus.
Marian Leahy
Mrs. Marian Leahy started at Trent University in 1986 as a housekeeper at Lady Eaton College and later worked at Bata Library before joining the Registrar's Office in 1994. She retired in June 2015 as senior records officer, a position she held for 14 years. Among her duties, Mrs. Leahy was responsible for overseeing the degree audit process, organizing the logistical aspects of Trent's convocation, and advising students of the results of their application to graduate, a task she carried out "with patience and thoughtfulness." From 2009 to 2011, Mrs. Leahy was also a staff representative on Trent University's Board of Governors.
Prof. Dawson will receive the Eminent Service Award at Trent’s convocation
ceremony on Tuesday, June 7 at 10:00 a.m. Mrs. Leahy will be presented with
the award during the ceremony on Wednesday, June 8 at 2:00 p.m.

Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching
Established in 1976, the Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching is Trent's
most distinguished teaching honour. The award is presented annually to a faculty
or staff member who displays exemplary teaching, as well as exemplary concern
for students.
2016 Winner
Trent University is pleased to announce that the Symons Award for Excellence
in Teaching will be presented to Professor Joel Baetz on Friday, June 3,
2016 at the Trent Durham 11:00 a.m. ceremony in Durham.
Joel Baetz
Dr. Joel Baetz, an assistant professor of English Literature at Trent University Durham, is recognized as an authentic, enthusiastic, and insightful educator and mentor whose carefully considered teaching methodologies engage students as active participants in the process of learning and discovery. The collaborative classroom environments that Professor Baetz facilitates are lauded for the ways in which they inspire critical analysis, open discussion, and the exploration of different ideas and interpretations. His students also appreciate how Prof. Baetz establishes clear expectations and provides ongoing support to help students meet or exceed those expectations; how he offers valuable and comprehensive feedback on assignments; and how his welcoming presence and numerous contributions continue to foster and enrich the academic and social life of the Durham campus.

Distinguished Research Award
Established in 1986, the Distinguished Research Award is given annually to a
member of the Trent University faculty in recognition of outstanding achievement
in research and scholarship.
2016 Winner
Trent University is pleased to announce that the 2016 Distinguished Research
Award, one of the University’s top honours, will be presented to Dr. Suresh Narine on Thursday, June 8 at the 10:00 a.m. convocation ceremony.
Suresh Narine
Dr. Suresh Narine is one of the world’s foremost authorities and leading scientists in the groundbreaking field of biomaterials, a Trent University alumnus, a professor in Physics & Astronomy and Chemistry, and the director of the Trent Centre for Biomaterials Research (TCBR). Professor Narine has had notable success since starting at Trent University in 2009. In February 2010, he was awarded a $1.25 million Ontario Research Chair in Green Chemistry and Engineering from the Council of Ontario Universities, in collaboration with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. In November of that same year, he was awarded a $3 million senior industrial research chair in biomaterials from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) in partnership with Elevance Renewable Sciences, Inc. and the Grain Farmers of Ontario which was recently renewed for a third consecutive term. Since the creation of the TCBR, the centre has filed 24 patents, published nearly 90 publications in peer reviewed journals and has trained six PhD graduates and five MSc graduates.
