It’s time to revisit and build upon some of those important conversations you had before your student started at Trent. Here are some key points you’ll want to reiterate, now that the school year is in full swing.
1. Get Involved
There’s so much more to university than what happens inside the classroom. The best way to learn and grow, both personally and academically, is by getting involved with campus and student life.
2. Explore your options
Treat University is the ultimate opportunity to learn about yourself. Make the most of it by challenging yourself to try new things and to meet new people.
3. Limit the number of hours you’re working at your part-time job
Having a part-time job while you are in school is a great way to gain experience and transferrable skills, and for many students it is a financial necessity. However, if possible, try to limit your work hours. You already have a full-time job, after all: attending university!
4. Be realistic about your grades
Sure, you want to hold yourself to a high standard, but make sure it’s an attainable standard—one that reflects the fact that your peer group is now made up entirely of high-achieving students. Translation: An average mark means you’re pretty smart. Remember, too, that it takes time to learn the academic expectations at the university level.
5. Understand that university is different from high school
You’re the one in charge of your university experience—a realization that can be both exciting and a little scary. The good news is that you don’t have to handle everything on your own. It’s okay to turn to others for support!
