"Good Listener" Wins Part-time Teaching Faculty Award

Julian Blackburn College had another reason to hold its head high this month. Professor Jill Smith was named the first recipient of the Part-time Faculty Teaching Award, an honour bestowed upon her by the many students who voted for her. The Oshawa and Summer School Women's Studies instructor is known to her students as a mentor and a good listener, but especially for going above and beyond the call of duty, fundraising for women's shelters through a variety of activities, including a production of the Vagina Monologues. Beth Popham, Associate Dean and Principal of JBC, put the success and growth of the Oshawa campus down to people like Prof. Smith. "Jill has taken her students' learning beyond the classroom and out into the community, and she has helped to build the University community at Durham College."
