Professor Donald Mackay of Trent University was the recipient of a $50,000 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (nserc) Award of Excellence at a gala award ceremony held November 5th at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. One of three finalists for the 2001 Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering, Professor Mackay was selected for his research in environmental chemistry, in particular, the Mackay Models which predict the long-term behaviour, fate, and distribution of chemicals in the environment. The nserc Award of Excellence affirmed the popularity of Professor Mackay's models, widely used in universities, industry, and national and international government organizations. The Herzberg Award, worth $1 million in research funding, was presented to David Schindler of the University of Alberta, who started his career at Trent University in 1966 and received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Trent in 1995.
"These are hard financial times for research and graduate students," said Professor Mackay. "They have worked long and hard on the various projects of the Canadian Environmental Modelling Centre, the success of which has resulted in this award. By spending the $50,000 on them and their research colleagues, I am not only able to contribute to their careers in science, but also to express my gratitude for their efforts."
Also winning an nserc Award of Excellence was Richard Puddephatt of the University of Western Ontario. Of the three candidates, Dr. Brzustowski said: "These are individuals who have made exceptional contributions to knowledge and the country. The finalists have excelled in their research and in their influence in the research community."
