Study shows grads in demand

University graduates in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Education are in demand by employers at the approach of the turn of the century, according to a study recently released by SSHRC economist Dr. Robert C. Allen.

"Social sciences and humanities are one of the keys to Canada's success. This will dispel a lot of mythology about these university disciplines," said SSHRC President Marc Renauld, who released the report.

The Allen Report, which used Census and other Statistics Canada data, includes a cost-benefit analysis which notes that the rate of return to society on investment in the social sciences (9%) and education (10.2%) outstrips the rate of return for engineering (7.9%) and the rates of return for math and the physical sciences (7.4%). The rate of return on the humanities (7.8%) is also impressive.

Details about this study are found on the SSHRC Web site at http://www.sshrc.ca/english/resnews/pressreleases/allen-own.
