Trent tops Ontario in Maclean's poll-- again!

Trent again this fall for the ninth straight year has held its position as the leading university in Ontario among the 21-member category of primarily-undergraduate institutions across Canada in the Maclean's University Ranking Survey.

Trent also regained its third-place ranking in the national standings, up from fourth in 1998.

"Overall, we are delighted that Trent continues to lead the way among our peers in the category of smaller, primarily undergraduate universities within Ontario," said President Bonnie Patterson. "We are now working vigorously to launch a new plan for expansion and renewal that will maintain our position as a centre of excellence in liberal arts and science education in our region, our province and the country as a whole."

Trent's performance, based on data from the 1998-99 academic year, was marked by outstanding faculty indicators, through top nation-wide rankings in two key categories: the number of full-time faculty winning national awards and the number of research grants won by faculty in the natural and health sciences. In addition, Trent was ranked third in the research grants it received in the social sciences and humanities.

Trent maintained its excellent standing in small-class teaching in first and second years. Trent's ranking was also marked by an improvement in the average grades of its first year entrance class.
