Trent chemist awarded funding for protein research equipment

Trent University chemist Steven Rafferty has been awarded $61,389 by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to support his research into purification and analysis of proteins from microorganisms.

Rafferty's lab work on proteins will be facilitated through the purchase of a liquid chromatography system and UV-visible spectrophotometer.

The CFI award complements private sector contributions from Varian Canada and Pfizer Canada, bringing total funding to $153,473.

The chromatography system and the spectrophotometer are high-quality instruments found in industrial and academic research laboratories. Trent students working in Rafferty's lab will benefit from exposure to current techniques in protein purification and analysis.

Rafferty joined Trent's Chemistry Department in July 1998 after completing a five-year term as Visiting Fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He was educated at the universities of Waterloo and British Columbia. Rafferty is one of 48 new faculty members at 20 Canadian universities to receive a portion of $6.4-million in CFI research funding.
