Simply Water? Conference provided forum for lively debates

The most pressing and controversial issues about water were debated and discussed at an international workshop entitled "Simply Water?" hosted by Trent University last week. The conference was sponsored by the Sheperd Family.

In a series of three concurrent workshop sessions, speakers from Canada and the United States examined the need for new ways to manage our water resources in the face of changing global climate and economic conditions. The sessions focussed on the pertinent water issues: Who owns it? Can you trust it? And is there enough?

The conference closed with the thoughtful words of Henry Lickers. The conference attracted almost 100 participants from Ontario, Quebec and the United States. Among the delegates were biologists, municipal politicians, policy analysts, Native community members, and students.

"It was a very successful conference," said one of the conference organizers Leslie Collins. "The delegates were very knowledgeable about this area and the feedback from them was extremely positive."

The "Simply Water?" conference marked the 10th anniversary of the Sheperd Family lectures, funded through an endowment to Trent University and the Environmental Resource Studies Program. It was presented in conjunction with The Watershed Science Centre, The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, The Program on Water Issues at The Munk Centre for International Studies, University of Toronto, and the Native Studies Program at Trent.
