Metcalfe new research dean

Environmental Science Professor Chris Metcalfe has been named Dean of Research and Graduate Studies for Trent University, replacing Paul Healy, whose term expires June 30.

Reporting to the vice-president (academic), the dean assumes the leadership role in the development of policies for research and graduate studies. Other responsibilities include:

  • Supervision of the staff and management of the budget of the Office of Research and Graduate Studies
  • Internal and external promotion of research activities of Trent faculty
  • Liaison with research groups, centres and institutes
  • Assisting faculty in exploring potential commercial applications of research and development
  • Management of the budgets of graduate programs

As dean, Metcalfe will represent Trent at meetings and conferences and a number of key committees related to research and graduate studies, chair the committee on graduate studies and serve as secretary to selection committee for the distinguished research award.

In his new position he will also become ex-officio member of Senate, Faculty Board, President's Executive Group, Vice-Presidentıs Advisory Council and the University Committees on Research.

Metcalfe, who holds a PhD from McMaster, specializes in the field of aquatic toxicology especially of organic contaminants in lakes and watersheds. His recent research has focused on carcinogens and organic contaminants in fish, impacts of PCBs, chlorinated pesticides, pulp-mill effluents and occurrence of organic contaminants in whales, seals, and fish.
