Medal for Mackay

Trent professor and researcher Dr. Donald Mackay was a recipient this April of the prestigious Engineering Medal for Research and Development. The award, given by the Professional Engineers of Ontario recognizes engineers "who have improved quality of life through the ingenious application of their engineering skills."

Dr. Mackay was discribed as a pioneer in environmental chemistry and was cited for his leadership in the field of environmental modelling, and for his contribution "to the world's understanding of our complex environment."

Dr. Mackay holds a jointly funded National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) - Chemical Industry Chair and is Director of the Canadian Environmental Modelling Centre at Trent. The focus of Dr. Mackay's work concerns water quality in the Great Lakes and the Arctic.

In making the award the Professional Engineers of Ontario acknowledged that "the models developed by Dr. Mackay and his team enable scientists, governments and others to understand the 'big picture' of chemical fate in the environment and to target environmental improvement in areas of greatest need."

More on Dr. Mackay's work and the Canadian Environmental Modelling Centre is on Trent University's Web site at www.trentu.ca/envmodel.
