Interim registrar Susan Salusbury
Susan Salusbury, previously senior associate registrar at York University, began in July as Trent's interim registrar. She succeeds Paul Thomson, who also served as associate vice-president.
Salusbury graduated from York in psychology and human resources development and was then employed at that institution for 26 years, the last 12 of those in the office of the registrar. She had also done student advising and systems work at York.
Although new in her role, Salusbury will oversee several initiatives that are under way. One is the relocation of financial aid staff into the Office of the Registrar. This move will occur in the fall after renovations are completed. Another is the recruitment effort, which Salusbury describes as very well organized for this fall, and a third is the implementation of electronic scheduling software recently purchased from Infosilem, a company based in Quebec.
The new software provides assistance in reducing timetable conflicts with schedules, exams and event management. The first module to be implemented will be the event software, which considers which rooms are available for special events such as guest lectures or meetings. Next the exam schedule will be put into action to create the examination schedule in October. The room scheduling component will be the final phase of the implementation.
Also within Salusbury's focus is the demand coming from the double cohort of students and the university's expansion to accommodate that group. Some needs are obvious, such as space for the additional students, but Salusbury is also considering the implications that the additional demand will create in all areas, including admissions, scholarships, recruitment, records, scheduling and financial aid.
Salusbury and her husband Mark, an artistic wood-turner who sells his work in galleries across Canada, purchased a five-acre property near Bethany and have enjoyed country life there over the past year. She'll serve as interim registrar on contract until year-end. A job competition will occur this fall.
