Bennett, Walsh named to Order of Canada

Jalynn BennettJalynn Bennett, immediate past chair of the Trent University Board of Governors, has been named a member of the Order of Canada. Bennett, of Toronto, joined Trent's Board in 1987 and completed a five-year term as chair at the end of June 1999. She continues to be an honorary member of the Board.

Bennett is a consultant to the private, public and not-for-profit sectors on strategic positioning and organizational development. Bennett's citation describes her an "an expert in investment strategy..." It notes: "She has contributed to Canadian public policy as a Director of the Bank of Canada and as a member of numerous federal and provincial commissions. Further, she demonstrates a commitment to community service and higher education, sharing her expertise with non-profit and educational institutions."

Also named a new member of the order was actor, writer, director, political satirist and honorary Trent graduate Mary Walsh of St. John's, Newfoundland. Walsh appears on the CBC-TV series This Hour Has 22 Minutes. She received the honorary degree at Trent's 1998 convocation for her contributions to the performing arts in Canada. She returned to Trent that November to give the annual Margaret Laurence lecture. Walsh's citation notes "...she is a committed activist who has supported the St. John's Resource Centre for the Arts and Oxfam Canada's recent campaign for human rights."

Established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour, appointments to the Order of Canada are made on the recommendation of an Advisory Council, chaired by the Chief Justice of Canada.
