Alumni awards Spirit of Trent

A 1997 Wastershed Ecosystems grad from Mexico has been named the recipient of the alumni Spirit of Trent Award.

Roberto Acosta, who also graduated from Trent with a BSc in Computer Studies and Environmental Science, was nominated for his environmental work in Mexico City. He introduced the first hispanic integral health solar exposure and awareness program with daily public UV Index reports and the integral monitoring of the ultraviolet solar radiation in conjunction with academic institutions and the media.

He designed, implemented and operated a UV monitoring network for the Ministry of the Environment Mexico City government and developed the first air quality environmental information system in Mexico City that reports real-time data. Mexico City has the highest ozone pollution levels in the world.

Tony Storey, Director of Alumni Affairs, says plans to present the award, which is given to an alum who has made a difference through a contribution to the university, the alumni association or the community, have not been finalized. Previous award winners have included James Orbinski for his international work as an emergency medicine specialist and Gordon Watson who contributed a significant collection of early Ontario archaeological artificats to the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
