Campaign reaches 88 per cent of goal

Trent's "Beyond Our Walls" campaign has reached 88 per cent of its $17-million goal. In making the announcement at Senate on April 10th, Tony Storey, Director Alumni Affairs, said he was particularly proud of the tremendous support from Trent alumni.

Approximately 150 faculty, staff, board members, alumni and private citizens have rallied around the university and volunteered their time to support the campaign. To date, 3,514 donors have invested in the Trent campaign.

"About one-third of the funds raised have come from the Peterborough Community and Campus Division campaigns," says Susan Mackle, Vice-President of Advancement. "The fact that Trent has attracted 400 first-time donors is a reflection of how the university is viewed as a vital community asset and centre of educational excellence."

Events such as the Chancellor's Dialogue, supported by Quaker Oats of Canada, have extended Trent's profile in the community. "As we continue to close the campaign, this commitment will play a crucial role in helping us meet our $17-million goal," adds Mackle.

Highlights of the campaign success include:

  • 60 new-named scholarships and bursaries to support students
  • a $1-million increase in the Alumni Association Bursary Endowment
  • a $10.75-million increase in the Endowment Fund from 1996-99, through gifts and matching grants
  • installation of a new, high speed internet access that benefits the residents of Peterborough and provides students, faculty and staff faster access to new resources
  • expansion of research capabilities through the creation of the Water Quality Centre and the James McLean Oliver Ecological Centre
  • improvements to Otonabee College including additional classrooms, lecture hall, videoconference facility and cafeteria
  • opening of a new Interactive Learning Centre
  • providing the private sector matching funds required to receive $3.9-million in new funding from grant programs including the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Students Opportunities Trust Fund

Beyond Our Walls was launched publicly in October 1999 with the goal of raising $17-million to increase: supports for students; supports for learning, teaching and research; and support for campus renewal.
