Founding coach honored
Field hockey marks 25 years

"Way back in the beginning there was Gillian," says Trent's current field hockey coach Amy Hollingsworth. Gillian Stamp coached women's field hockey for about 20 years until she retired in 1992.

Last Friday, the current team honored Stamp by establishing a fund for field hockey players in her name. Called the Gillian Stamp Friends of Field Hockey Fund, it will provide an annual dollar prize for a deserving player. Stamp will help establish the criteria.

Stamp was founding coach of field hockey at Trent. About five years before she signed on as assistant to athletics director Paul Wilson in 1972, she had started the first field hockey team in Peterborough at St. Peter's High School, later encouraging another enthusiast to form a rival team at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School. At Trent, she trained all-star players and was named coach of the year by the then Ontario Women's Interuniversity Athletics Association.

About 50-60 former team members were invited to the 25th anniversary celebration last Friday.
