Foreign affairs official speaks at TIP's 15th anniversary Canada's assistant deputy foreign minister Lucie Edwards will speak at Trent Nov. 20 and 21 as part of a 15th anniversary celebration of the Trent International Program (TIP). Other events planned to mark the occasion include an open house at TIP's new quarters in Champlain College and a banquet featuring former TIP directors Nov. 21. Edwards, assistant deputy minister of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, will give three presentations. On Nov. 20, she will give a guest lecture, Food, Freedom and Forests: The Challenge of Renewal Development, in Champlain College council chambers at 7:30 p.m. On Nov. 21, she will give a student workshop about international careers at 10:30 a.m. in Lady Eaton College Pit. Then at 12:30 p.m. in the Champlain College Morton Reading Room over a brown bag lunch, she will discuss recent trends in Canadian foreign policy. Edwards graduated from Trent in 1976 with an honors BA in history and economics. "We regard Lucie as the first graduate of Comparative Development Studies," says TIP director David Morrison. "She did all of the courses available on the Third World and international development, graduating just before the program was founded in 1976." She went on to complete a master's degree in public administration at Harvard University. Edwards began her foreign service career at the Canadian embassy in Tel Aviv and has served in South Africa. As high commissioner to Kenya from 1993 to 1995, she was also ambassador to Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia and Uganda.In 1995, she received the Public Service Award of Excellence for work in Rwanda. In Ottawa, she has completed assignments for the economic and corporate branch of the foreign service department and recently chaired the Southern Africa Task Force and been director of Middle Eastern relations. Banquet honors Matthews The anniversary celebrations include a banquet Nov. 21 in Lady Eaton College Pit and dining hall beginning at 6:30 p.m. Founding TIP director Jack Matthews will be the guest of honor and his successor Karanja Njoroge may make an appearance. The Tom Nind International Scholar for 1997-98 will be announced at the dinner and 1997-98 TIP scholars will be named. And the Trent International Student Association (TISA) will perform international music, dance and theatre. Tickets will be on sale in the TIP Office early in November. They cost $20 for waged persons ($30, if willing to contribute to defraying the cost of less expensive tickets for students and unwaged persons) and $10 for students and unwaged persons. Also on Nov. 21, there will also be an open house at TIP's new quarters in Champlain College in the former college offices on the second floor, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. On Nov. 22, the TISA plans to hold a dance.
