Associate deans redefined

The positions of associate deans have been revised prior to beginning searches to replace incumbents.

The teaching load of the associate dean of science has been increased to 0.7 from 0.3 and the administrative responsibilities reduced to 0.3 from 0.7. And the support for teaching and learning that has been part of this position has been shifted to the associate dean of arts and science and principal of Julian Blackburn College. As a result, the division of responsibilities for the latter will be 0.8 administrative and 0.2 academic.

The increased teaching load for the associate dean of science is expected to provide a "net savings to the operating budget," interim vice-president academic David Morrison told Senate March 10. That person will be able to teach another course.

The search for an associate dean of science will find a replacement for physics professor Keith De'Bell, whose term ends June 30.

De'Bell and Senator Stefan Bilaniuk told Senate the reduced administrative duties of the associate dean of science would not be possible without a science facilities manager.

Morrison said science department chairs believe that after a period of transition, many of the science facilities manager's responsibilities could be taken over by Physical Resources.

Classics professor Jackie Tinson has been acting JBC principal since 1996.

Appointments in both positions are for up to five years.
