Celebrating the black diaspora

The Trent African Caribbean Students Union launched its celebration of Black History Month last week with a film, a radio marathon of music and an evening of dance.

        Under the banner, Passport to the Diaspora, the students have organized events at Trent University that reflect the variety of black cultures around the world through films, music, dance, lectures and readings, says organizer Kevin Modeste.

        Here are the dates and events:

  • Feb. 5 Itea Zadu tells African and Caribbean tales, Traill College, 7:30 p.m.

  • Feb. 11 Writer Dionne Brand gives lecture, Champlain College council chambers, 7 p.m.

  • Feb. 12 Maritime folk singer Faith Nolan performs, in Lady Eaton College Pit, 8 p.m.

  • Feb. 25 Ken Alexander, co-author of Towards Freedom, a history of blacks in Canada, gives a talk in Champlain College council chambers, 7 p.m.

  • Feb. 26 Karen Carter Trio performs at Hot Belly Mama's, 10 p.m.

  • Feb. 28 Annual Trent International Students Association cultural outreach features a variety show with an international flavor, Wenjack Theatre, 8 p.m.
