Sculptor Bill Reid revived Haida art

Bill Reid, internationally recognized Haida artist, died March 13 in Vancouver at age 78 after a lengthy illness. He received an honorary degree from Trent in 1976.

The son of a Haida mother and Scots-American father, Reid revived Haida carving techniques and designs. He carved totem poles, a Haida canoe and his sculptures are part of collections in museums around the world.

Reid was an outspoken proponent of native rights. He also received honorary degrees from six other Canadian universities.
